Every year,
Parents Step Ahead honors parents who have taken a proactive
approach in their child’s educational and professional development.
During a dinner Gala celebration held in December, Parents Step
Ahead recognizes those parents with a special awards ceremony.
To qualify for the Parent of the Year, parents or guardians
must have attended one of the Parents Step Ahead seminars in the
Dallas, Garland, Fort Worth or Irving independent school districts
during the year. Parents who wish to be considered must write an
essay about the importance of parental involvement in a child's
life. Their child must also submit an essay about why his/her
parent should be selected.
A selection committee of local and national community and corporate
leaders selects the winners. Honorees receive a plaque, a computer
system, other gifts and the opportunity to speak with local and
national community and corporate leaders about the importance of
education.
“Parents who have made such an effort to ensure a better future for
their children – often at great personal sacrifice – should be
recognized every day of their lives,” said Colmenero. “Parents Step
Ahead is proud to give them the public recognition they deserve for
the example they are setting for their children and the community.”
